Landing in Brunei

This would be our first short flight in SE Asia after arriving and I was really looking forward to trying a new airline, a unique one at that. At the time of writing royal Brunei only service about 16 destinations around the world making them a bit more rare to fly.

We had the option to fly over with Air Asia, but we decided to try Royal Brunei Airlines over and would take air asia back.

Today’s flying time would be around two hours and its about 900 miles between the two airports.

To start our journey we would be taking the KLIA ekspres train from downtown KL to KLIA.

It was fairly easy to find the train and buy our tickets.
The ticket counter is really easy to find

The cost of a 1 way ticket is 35 MYR (Around 10 USD)
The train departs every 15 minutes during peak hours and takes 28 minutes point to point.

We enjoyed the ride to the airport and arrived with plenty of time to spare with check in.

KLIA is a pretty big airport and we found the Royal Brunei check in desk’s tucked away inside and checked in

There was about 10 people in line for check in, but the process was really quick and took around 5 minutes, we were greeted with a smile and made our way through security.
Today we would be departing from gate C6.

The airport was not very busy today and we made our way through security in about 10 minutes.

Once on the other side we took a look around inside the airport. There was plenty to do at KLIA and we were impressed with the amount of shops and places to relax.

There was a fun stand with model aircraft that showed every airline that flew into KUL airport in the main terminal.

With some time to spare we grabbed a coffee and checked out the KLIA jungle boardwalk, essentially an indoor / outdoor rain forest that is located in the middle of the departure terminal.

Once you pass through the plastic door you notice you are now outside but still in the terminal, we had a walk around and spotted some insects and birds, its a really cool feature to have inside a departure area.

We noticed that our flight was departing soon and so we headed towards our gate.

One thing no one informed us about was that we would need to pass through security again at the gate, it was not a major problem, just a bit annoying. We cleared security and were moved into a little waiting terminal to board our flight. We still had about 20 minutes before boarding and just had to sit and wait with everyone else.

Finally boarding was called, even though it was late everyone rushed to get on the flight and boarding was completed really quickly.

Once on board we were greeted with a rather drab grey bunch of seats in a 3 – 3 config. It was pretty bland, but I guess this makes it easy to keep clean.

My Seat

My Seat (45J)

I unpacked my things and made myself comfy. The seat itself was about average and did not offer much comfort, but that is pretty much what i expected.

Legroom was perfectly fine for a two hour flight and I had about 2 inches before my knees touch the seat in front.
A funny thing about the seats on this aircraft is that directly in front of you a little vanity mirror, I’m not sure if I would constantly want to check myself on a flight, so it was a first for me to see.

Sadly there was no person IFE on this flight, it was the old style 1 tv screen per 30 people, but it was a short flight so I was not fussed.

To my surprise we pushed back a little early. It was fairly overcast in KL today so i expected a few bumps on the climb out.

We taxied onto the runway and made our departure roll, we had a few small jolts on the climb out, but once we cleared 10,000ft it was a beautiful day for flying.

40 minutes after take off lunch service began, I was fairly hungry as we had got up pretty early.

The lunch choices today were either Beer or Chicken Strogonaugh. I decided to give the chicken a try (bad choice).

The chicken itself was absolutely disgusting and I could barely eat it, it was so salty and the sauce was a weird gravy sauce that really did not compliment the dish at all. I just had to make do with the rice and courgette portion of the dinner.

Desert was some form of cheesecake with raisins, it was much better than the main course and there was also a side of pasta soaked with Mayo, which i also did not eat.

Even though the food was pretty bad, the crew working on the flight today were amazing, they served the entire plane lunch within 30 minutes and came around twice to see if anyone needed more water.

For most of our flight we flew at around 36,000 ft and had fantastic clear skies for the entire time, it was one of the smoothest flights i have been on in a while.

We soon began our decent into Brunei and from the window I was able to watch as we cruised up the coast before making a turn for landing

On our decent we hit a few small updrafts as it was fairly hot and humid on our arrival into Brunei, but the landing was spot on and we touched down nicely.

We arrived into Brunei on time and arrived at the new terminal. The terminal was so new (March 2014) that it was not even open for departures yet, and arrivals was just as bad. At the time of our visit there was no ATM to withdraw any cash and no public transport from the airport and only 1 taxi waiting outside. The airport was a ghost town with no customer service representatives around anywhere at all. Thankfully our hotel offered a free shuttle from the airport to the hotel, but there were no phones in the terminal either. In the end i found the royal Brunei ticket office in the old terminal and one of the kind ladies behind the counter called our hotel for me and they came to pick us up.

I snapped a quick photo of our plane on the tarmac in Brunei

Off into Brunei we ventured.
